Giantsgrave

Pillar Stone

On the summit of a hill in Giantsgrave townland stands this 2.74 metre high cross pillar. The sandstone pillar, which is aligned NE-SW, bears two crosses. The largest of these is carved in relief on the SW face, pictured left. The other cross, on the NE face, is a sunken cross with a central boss. There are several legends associated with the pillar stone. It was quite difficult to see this cross as the pillar as is surrounded by a concrete wall and the small enclosure was full with nettles. In Irish the hill is known as An Cnoc Air a bhFuair Fionn Fios - The hill where Finn MacCumhaill received his prophetic knowledge. Another story tells us the stone was thrown from the top of Slievenamon by a giant and landed here. This really is an awesome pillar stone and well worth a visit.

Situated: From Clonmel take the R688 north for about 4 kilometres. Then take a left turn signposted Giants Grave Pillar stone. This sign is on the right opposite the turn. There are sharp left and right bends. Look for the first farm gate after the second bend. ate a
